TEMPLE, Texas (Jan. 27, 2022) – The Temple Symphony Orchestra (TSO) returns to the stage at the Temple College’s Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center Auditorium for the first time in two years at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets for the general public are $25. Temple College faculty, staff and students can purchase tickets in advance at a discounted price. See below.
This concert features internationally renowned trumpeter Allen Vizzutti performing virtuosic traditional cornet style works along with American Big Band music.
“Allen Vizzutti is one of the most amazing trumpet soloists in the world and I am so excited to have him in Temple again,” said Thomas Fairlie, musical director and TSO conductor. “He is a virtuoso, both technically and musically. His range and the sound he exhibits are second to none. He is equally comfortable on both the Jazz and Classical sides of the repertoire. He has performed in Temple four times over the last 30 years, twice with the symphony and twice with the Temple Jazz Orchestra.”
The program features different types of music in each half. The first half features traditional cornet solos which really show off Vizzutti’s virtuosity, Fairlie said. The second half will feature all American Style big band swing styles with a jazz trio in the middle of the orchestra.
“We are opening with one of the greatest American composers, Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Overture to Candide,’ and in the middle of the first half we are playing Leroy Anderson’s ‘The Typewriter,’ which is a really fun piece that I refer to as a concerto for typewriter and orchestra! It will feature principal percussionist Scott Dudley as the typist,” Fairlie said.
The full program includes:
Overture to Candide (1956) - Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)
La Virgen de la Macarena
Ode for trumpet
The Typewriter (Scott Dudley, soloist)
Carnival of Venice
Intermission
